Submission Guidelines

Thrēo is an independent global and interdisciplinary online quarterly that provides a new platform for forward-thinking storytelling from experts, ideators and other contributors deeply immersed in the work of defense, diplomacy and development.

Upcoming 2023 submission deadlines:

  • May 1, 2023 for the Summer 2023 issue
  • August 1, 2023 for the Fall 2023 issue
  • October 1, 2023 for Winter 2024 issue

We are looking for informed, forward-thinking storytelling at the intersection of defense, diplomacy and development (the “3Ds”). Our goal is to engage a broad audience in thinking and caring about compelling issues that are left uncovered or presented in ways that distance the reader. The publication centers on first-hand accounts, reader-friendly analysis, advocacy and strategies from local, national and global perspectives. We accept submissions from contributors with personal stories, insights or compelling ideas regardless of gender, age, views, background and so forth provided the content is related to one or more of the 3Ds. Please note the following guidelines.

  • We are seeking non-academic cutting-edge personal, editorial, short and long form, investigative, news, reviews and feature writing on topics surrounding the 3Ds. The Thrēo is not a traditional research journal and therefore the writing style should engage and educate a broad audience.
  1. We welcome short or long form video journalism pitches such as interviews, insights or field reporting. While we welcome the use of high-quality video equipment or direction, videos can be shot from simple mobile devices as long as the content is clearly understood and seen.
  2. We welcome other formats related to one of the 3Ds such as art, photography, flash fiction or nonfiction and informative infographics either as stand-alone pieces or in support of written pieces.
  3. Please be mindful that submissions should not be advertisements, promotional or press releases.
  4. Submissions must be the original work of the author and must not have appeared in any other digital or print publication.
  5. You may send a pitch, a pitch with a portion of your piece, or a completed submission. Please include a short bio and your location as well as links to writing or other digital samples (if any).
  1. Pitches should include a compelling well-structured angle, a list of sources you intend to use (if applicable) and the names and titles or descriptions of people you plan to interview (if any).

Please submit to thethreoteam@gmail.com and include “SUBMISSION” in the Subject line.
